PAINTING - THE MOST DIVINE NATURE OF THE PHENOMENON

Interesting interview. (Interview by Emma HAKOBIAN)
-------------------------------------------------
Long ago, some sort years 7 - 8 ago, I heard that Georgia is a private collection, in which the collected paintings of Armenian artists who lived, live, create and still those who create in this ancient city, where for various reasons have merged two art schools - the Armenian and Georgian, to form the new school of painting Tiflis. Of course, to visit the collection I have had no chance but to get acquainted with her happy owner recently happened in Moscow.
Aleksandr Bogdanovich Piradov - well-known scientist in the field of building structures, doctor of technical sciences, professor. For many years actively engaged in science, was the chief scientist of the Georgian Institute of Energy and Energy Structures, Professor of the Technical University. At the moment - a member of the Academic Council on the protection of dissertations of the University and chief researcher of the above-mentioned Institute.
His collection of works by artists of Armenian, born Tbilisi, for 20 years.

- Aleksandr Bogdanovich, you are a professor, doctor of technical sciences, and suddenly ... a passion for painting. Tell us how you have come to this?
- Collecting actively engaged in after his 50 th anniversary. Previously science absorbed all my thoughts on the hobby no time left.
- What was the beginning of the collection?
- I had two paintings - a portrait of the son and the mother of the artist Piradova Basil, the brother of my grandfather, who was born in Tiflis, a nobleman.
Читать дальше...
By the way, we Piradovy - the indigenous inhabitants of Tbilisi. In the princely-noble families of Georgia in 1857, my great-grandfather is listed under number 87. I have a copy of this list, the original is kept in the Matenadaran in Yerevan. So, the painting "Portrait of the son" and "Portrait of Mother" Basil Piradova and became the basis of my collection.
New lesson completely fascinated me. I am sure that this is what has helped me in a difficult time of perestroika, when it was impossible to do science - it has not been - has helped to adapt to new conditions of life, retained powers of the soul, save me. Meetings with artists, art critics, interesting people, visiting studios, exhibitions and workshops - all supported me morally.
- How many paintings in the collection?
- Today we can talk about it seriously - more than a hundred.
- Only Armenian artists?
- Mostly, but there are also works by contemporary Georgian artists. I often give the picture, being sure that they have saved me. Cloths same Armenian artists I buy purposefully.
- Why this task you have set for yourself?
- At the beginning of XIX century in our city created Tiflisskaya school of modern painting. An inseparable part of it was the work of great portrait painter Akop Hovnatanian and Stefanos Nersessian.
At various times, worked here Bashinjaghyan G., E. Tatevosyan, A. Hakobyan, V. Hodzhabegov etc.
At the end of XIX century was created to promote the Caucasian Society of Fine Arts (copy), which operated School of Painting and Sculpture. In the copy studied many artists who later became known, for example Yervand Kochar. By the way, his work of this period, I recently purchased. It is dated 1916 year, while the author was only 17 years old, but the picture is professional.
In 1916 was organized by the Union of Armenian artists. It existed until 1921. Regularly open exhibitions, showrooms. We can say Tiflis became the cradle of a new Armenian art. Remembering all this, I set out to assemble the most complete collection of works by artists of Armenian born in Tbilisi. In my collection there are works like the creators of the older generation: G. Bashindgaghyan, E. Tatevosyan, A. Hakobyan, V. Gayfedzhyana, G. Grigoryan (Giotto), A. Bazhbeuk-Melikov, A. Dilbaryana, L. Bayahcheva - so and modern: Gayane Khachaturian, Robert Kondahsazova, Zuleyki Bazhbeuk-Melikov, Shamir Ter-Minasyan, Merujan Shahumyan.
- Aleksandr Bogdanovich, you're not only doing the gathering, but also to search, research, saving pictures from extinction, restore authorship. Tell us how you got the picture "Unemployment" French Armenian Edgar Shahin?
- Oh-oh, this is a very interesting story. Once on the street shabbily dressed old man asked me to buy from him now. When we arrived in his dark komorku in Avlabar, I almost went crazy when he saw the picture and especially after reading her inscription in French: "Monsieur Shirvanzade with admiration. Edgar Shahin, Paris, 1910. I paid the seller the amount which he called, and happy, took a unique work home. Later I learned that the famous writer Alexander Shirvanzade brought her back to Tbilisi from Paris, and already the heirs of his "unemployed" was sold.
- Great success of your collection - the famous artist Alexander Bazhbeuk-Melikov.
- I am proud of them. Special joy it gives me his "bath". After all, when I bought it, the byline was not, but knowing the technique, style of writing masters, suggested that this was one of his early works. I bought it. Subsequent research showed that: my intuition did not let down - the picture is written in the beginning of the XIX century and was painted by Alexander Bazhbeuk-Melikov.
- Imagine how much joy it was!
- Of course. Although I spend a lot of energy, forces on this, but doing everything at the call of the soul, I get great pleasure.
- I think you can tell how happy you brought not only themselves, but many viewers Tbilisi, showing them in March this year, paintings from his collection. How did the idea of the exhibition titled "Forgotten Names"?
- Many of the names of Armenian artists for another hearing in Tbilisi. But there are others about which I wanted to recall. Together with the Embassy of Armenia in Georgia (GA ambassador Khosroyev), the Union of Armenians of Georgia, Center for Cultural links "Caucasian house" and gallery "Sololaki" We opened the exhibition "Forgotten Names". I gave for this action of the TS Nalbandian, R. G. Nalbandian, VB Piradova, N. Alexanian-Shahaziz, AI Shamshinova, A. Hakobyan, M. H. Beck -- Marmarchevoy, DG Chislieva, MM Hununts and others - a total of 16 artists. Held grand opening. I told him about each work, its author. At the end of the evening the best artistic forces of Georgia was given a small concert. Vernissage was held at a high level. There were a lot of art historians, artists, intellectuals. It was an event about which he wrote the local newspaper, reported on television. And we have achieved our goal - was reminded that these painters lived and worked successfully in our city and left a deep imprint on its culture.
- Aleksandr Bogdanovich, and further plans for what?
- Upon his return home will begin preparatory work for the exhibition "Armenian artists Tiflis school of painting, which I intend first to be held in Tbilisi, then in Yerevan. And if conditions permit, bring it to Moscow.
In addition, I am completing work on the album, it will be released in the near future.

Ashot Hovhannisyan (1929-1997)

60-ies in Armenian art were the years of diligent search - old let off with difficulty, and the new with more difficulty making way. Collides head-on Socialist Realism and the new art, just barely sticking out from under the Soviet sheets. Ashot Oganesyan embarked on an artistic path, calmly and confidently. Farmer's son, he shied away from the city and a little shy. He drew a touching "genre" of rural life without guile, and very picturesque.
Читать дальше...
How he went to the geometric abstractions, nobody knows. However, the fact remains: Ashot, not looking back, and by itself, felt the need to shift around the world in its own coordinate system. The result was unprecedented in our painting paintings, where every idea was embodied in the precise geometry of simple forms, is no less compelling and no less picturesque. Years of painstaking work yielded impressive results.
Ashot has always been free, as always stubbornly did what he thought was necessary and possible. He never swam in another fairway and never got into the ideological network. Presumably, this is the phenomenon of it, because the temptation is always there was plenty. No sooner had slightly relaxed at the expense of beliefs, perhaps even at the expense of quality, but he afford such a luxury he could not because it is not just a man who knows how to put the oil on canvas, but man, this oil is extracted from the sweat and blood from the head pain and anguish of heart. Ashot Oganesyan always look the truth in art never lies, even the best intentions. In this sense, he is a realist absolutely truthful, what in the national artistic structure is not much. If any of the current situation, he always manages to remain Armenian.
Geometric paintings gave way to a powerful paintings, murals. This was not easy, but without unnecessary suffering, little by little. The plane of the canvas becomes a kind of "wall", was transformed into new matter. It worked only he and no more. By national fine tradition, he added a new quality. His red, blue and yellow sounded hard and clear over the whole of Armenian art.
Ashot makes great art, it is manly and refined, and with all its generality concrete and lives the life of its creator. In it the artist combines art and skill of the medieval creator, knows how caught up in our time and preserved on the purity of mind and soul unbribable.

Life Gevorg Grigoryan can be considered a feat. Seven years of having lost his father, he was forced to earn a livelihood of the family. By only he did not have to be: a seller of newspapers, courier, glazier, gofer to the barber, grocery store, oil stock. The painfully long standing difficult days, followed by the humiliation and cuffs, paid pitiful coppers. Sad school of life left unhealed scar in the heart of the artist. But the further fate take him from art, the more he strove to him, the harder it was for him in life, the more the husband of his hand ...
Gevorg Grigoryan not write large paintings, he simply had never been such an opportunity, despite that his works are perceived as monumental paintings or large fragments of frescoes.

Means, which handles Grigoryan precise and definite: emphasize the constructive solid figure, the geometrization of forms, compositional clarity, restraint of color - all together tells his works inner strength, expressiveness, energy. Conciseness reinforces generality, condenses the thought and form, focusing on the basic idea of the paintings.

I had good teachers, but one way or another, about painting, I know little. You can say I know nothing. Forty years of writing in oils and did not understand what the color: when he is born, how come, where it goes, as preserved? .. I know that painting is my life and besides this miracle God has given me a wonderful creature, in whose presence everything is beautiful and clear. I know little and do not understand how others draw, walk, swear, when close to them there is no such person as my Diana.

"... No force can deviate from its path. His artistic life did not know of stagnation." "As a lover, picked up the brush and stood before the easel, even in those days, when he was completely unable to exhibit." Grieved and insulted, but do not despair. He was a unique example of the artist who selflessly serve art, the artist's steadfast and principled consistency. "There were some features of Don Quixote. The idea of truth in art, for it has always been above the standard of welfare and glory, the desire that leaves the person with the last breath."

"Gregorio Shiltyan artist-naturalist, who seeks to achieve a kind of absolute expression ... He looks into the essence of things and the means with which he enters the world of infinite art."

"Painting Shiltyana stands out as a unique exception, and, finally, the general public may be pleased to exclaim:" Finally, a man who knows how to draw! "
Marciano Bernardi

Each blade Gregorio Shiltyana - small world. Each placed motive - an allegory, every motive - the principle ...
Its form is as abstract as smart and ignored by Cubist artists. Shiltyan is aware. It takes cubism as science or the birth of construction tel. He banishes from the African spirit and satanic image. In contrast, retains a sense of communicative values and a secret desire, as he said Paul Cezanne, the forms of nature to the cone, the shaft, a pyramid. He argues that a work of art, no matter what style it is, the product of pure thought, and believes that this rule with no exceptions.

"All my characters - Armenians"
Gayane Khachaturian - symbolic face of Armenian culture. For decades. Yerevan saw her paintings in 1971 at the exhibition organized by the Physical Institute in DC. Her appearance in the Armenian culture happened naturally and organically: the atmosphere of those years is quite favorable.

Exhibition in YerPhI was noisy, extraordinary success. Many of her works were bought, soon appeared the first publication and reproduction. Thus began the ascent Gayane on artpiramide. After several years of work first appeared in the museum halls - in the Yerevan Museum of Modern Art.
Who is she, Gayane, Tbilisi compatriot? Formally, an amateur artist, only three years of study in art school. Then there was an informal interaction with Yervand Kocharov and Alexander Bazhbeuk-Melikyan. Work ascetic workshop Bazhbeuka finally geared Gayane. It is precisely identify and evaluate unusual talent Gayane, he forbade her to even think about the Academy of Arts. "All you have nothing left." The wise wizard was not mistaken. Academic training, and Gayane, we can say definitely, absolutely incompatible concepts.

An extraordinary gift of nature, combined with an even more unusual spiritual world and way of thinking and formed the Gayane, which is. The one that works and artistic surprises the audience. Her art lures and attracts. Once sucked into its zone of attraction, stay there forever. Working day after day, setting aside everything that does not fit within the boundaries of her world, forgetting everyday hustle and bustle, so distracting, she made art the only meaning of life, the only purpose.
Paintings and drawings by Gayane originally struck a surprising emotional impact and subtle spirituality, which eventually acquired great depth and strength. It has created his own world, no, the planet that exists apart from and contrary to all the canons and rules. Because it is, this planet, becoming the exclusive self-worth. Gayane colonized her strange, aloof, but very nice creatures - human beings and beasts, zoomorphic creatures, baroque ladies in crinolines and hats employed confusing the viewer activity. Incidentally, it would have made a wonderful, truly unbridled passion and beauty of stage designer, set designer, turn the wheel of fortune a little bit the other side.
"My space - the theater," - says Gayane. She created creatures playing the mysterious, colorful performances, where zamesheny mythological and artistic reminiscences - memories of the distant past or, perhaps, about the future, the entire intellectual and spiritual world of the author. That is why her characters are serious, full of dignity and consciousness of the importance of their mission. She created a closed planet - the theater - and was able to make one believe in its existence. For Gayane death yearning to portray the visible world, accessible to all. Because it frees its magical fantasy. But the fantasy, imagination - like a fog, they can raspolztis disappear. The main thing - to have time image formed in the mind or the subconscious, to fix without loss, and in the process of work and to enrich another, fill the details, texture, color.

Art has long Gayane get outside of her studio, has been recognized everywhere. It does not have any explicit national characteristics. Nevertheless, Gayane believes that in every work laid Armenian code. "All my characters - the Armenians," - she said. This code, no doubt, laid in the very Gayane, unusual, extraordinary personality, subtle sensory subtle movements of the soul, - his own and his invented characters. Because her paintings are born easy, with huge costs of nerve force and spiritual energy.

Does it make sense to decipher the meaning of her works undercover - a question gnawing and their owners, and spectators. Open question. In any case, it is very exciting, and risked almost physically delays in staging theater Gayane. Not very helpful, and the name - only as a point of fragile and ephemeral support. "Names, - explains Gayane - appear together with images, I did not invent. They are like a picture frame is collected, they are clues. Certainly, they help to lift the veil of mystery. But only open slightly, no more. The rest have to think out and feel, not forgetting that the mysteries of life and art is always there. One of the secrets Gayane - the scene of action.

In her paintings there is no recognizable nature or interiors, and there are some signs. Conditional, multilayered space, where a lot of stairs, passages, arches, gates, often reminiscent of sophisticated decorations. "My space - the theater. It is like a mirror - they provide an infinite depth. Mirroring very individual vision. His vision Gayane once called "the theater mirror dolls. It is quite convincing.
Audiences were mesmerized by the content of works Gayane and trying to unravel their secret for a time, seem to forget about her beautiful paintings and drawings of the virtuoso. Mastery of its growing from year to year, painting became a luxury, museum acquired a jewel. Tsvetovidenie Gayane strikes, it can easily and gracefully confronts the most difficult color, seeking semi-precious glow.

Besides that pictures Gayane rainbow shines like caskets of jewels from them, it seems, do not come immediately audible sounds and not immediately tangible spicy aromas and tastes. Many titles just talking about it. Gayane synthesizes feelings. "Red procession with the rustle of black plum," "Blue curl quince." The viewer is given complete freedom to plunge into the hubbub and clamor of the crowd, consisting of krasnovolosyh women, angels, Renaissance, ladies, dwarfs, panthers, peacocks. This whole community of creatures unknown to envelop the magical sounds and wonderful smells of incense, fruit and maybe even the scenes of the theater, which she created in spite of the outside world, boring and lean for Gayane. And here her hands, mind and heart created or, perhaps, to recreate the world, absolutely interesting, with an infinite set of never repeating the staging.

East and West face on the stage of the theater quite peacefully, otherwise perhaps would hear the rustle of black plum, is felt to blow the theater of the Red Night, is followed by a leopard in a purple motorcade finally he spun to her eternal spinning wheel. On the planet or in the theater Gayane although passions run high, yet there is peace and harmony. Her works radiate, do good in the original sense of the word. Each of her paintings - a clot of her feelings, memories, sensations, a clot, woven from different cultures, but ultimately each painting or drawing - is "cardiogram" her troubled soul, free neuvidennyh fantasies and dreams. "Dreams? No, no dreams, I do not see "- she once said. Dreams of escape, and why she dreams of when rather close my eyes and go to the back streets of consciousness and the inner eye to see that just asks to the canvas in a luxury theater of the ...

Gayane long wizard. Her work is unique. The illusory world created by it, gentle, fragile and beautiful. Gayane herself, her work is admired and inescapable interest of all who at least once had the opportunity to come into contact with them. Over the enchanting beauty of her paintings in sight, but rather felt it wise reflection. On the world, about people, about the passions and sorrows.
On the beauty of violets of the night, yellow pears and mirror dolls.
Gayane - property of a universal culture.
But while we remember that in it, as in her works, founded the Armenian code. Code that can not hack ...

Then on the program - the first showing of the documentary "The Rustle of urban distaff" (Gayane Khachaturian). Before the demonstration - Levon Grigorian, filmmaker, journalist and public figure. His essays, portraits, essays published in the Literary Gazette, and the book "Armen Djigarkhanyan", "Sergei Paradjanov" and others came out in the light of the Armenian and Russian languages.

He is the author and director of the television program "Andrei and Sergei" about art, fate and personal relationships Tarkovsky and Sergei Parajanov. L. Grigoryan - winner of the contest I Interregional videos on national cultures "Eurasian kaleidoscope. Nomination creative portrait for the film "Gayane Khachaturian," he won the contest and was awarded the Crystal Globe.
Film L. Grigorian "Rustle city distaff" is based on a story about the artist himself, about his work, about their experiences on their own, we can say the main and constant muse - city of Tbilisi.
I bring to your attention this confession.

"I Gayane Khachaturian ... Born in Tbilisi ... When I came to consciousness, the first time I saw myself in the mirror with big eyes and black chelochkoy ... For the second time - I was struck by the tears in her eyes.
Then in the 19 years I did not want to look at themselves. When in 26 years I got involved in painting and again looked at herself in the mirror, I felt that I turned into a dwarf, and that to me a huge hat.
And to this day I feel like a dwarf with an enormous hat. I take off my hat every time I walk through the city, along the bank of the Kura, approaching the moving mountains of Georgia and bow before his temples. This is not my city, this is for me the theater - the theater painting ... A painting is inseparable from me ... this is my skin, my skeleton ... I just die without a brush, palette, paints ...
In the past few years the city lost entertainment. This spectacle was present in every person. He went out into the street, like an actor on stage.
... Now it's just an empty theater, which has no actors. Actors or sleep, or depressed, or cry, and in the theater they have to be difficult. Some leave this theater-ship, swim in search of some sort of illusions. And there, perhaps, they will find no rest. This is exactly ...
In my childhood and youth in the city all went very slow gait.
It was a grand procession. It haunts me ... "The procession of blue Almond" ... This is a rally I see in this ... the blue color, as in the theater, when all on a blue background ... and there suddenly, like dust, leaking bright, bright spots.
... Very specific to the city - a few layers of powder on his face ... sleek leather - a very important factor in the city. Leather ... focuses on the skin. Leather has always had to be white ... This feature ... And so much powder ... Just a few layers. And on this white person was to be a smile! A very important factor! We had to draw in the lips lipstick. Multiple layers of powder, lipstick and a smile. Blessed ... Walking-march ... This was an incredible day! This was an incredible carnival! ..
I still perceive a person - they are for me as a barometer - Pirosmani, poets, lived here ... ENERGY city and everything connected with other worlds, I perceive only through people who lived here in this city. This town was full of personality ... Incredible personality. Even if the anonymous artisans ... Just ...
The city that gave birth to all the individuality! .. Personalities! I want to revive the image of the Tiflis craftsman - "Synergy". For me it's the kindest way. "
