Can you imagine: the USSR in the 35-m and a person name with the prefix "von"?

Quite. Perhaps this Stein von Memel in 1935 was still a citizen of Lithuania or Latvia, and could be any baronial titles.
I only became a citizen of the USSR in 1940.
For that fell under the repression in 1949.
(I, by the way familiar with one von Stein)

No, von Memel repressed in 1949. Probably the latter.

Set a few more photos, behind these inscriptions is not even photograph it, but on closer examination, the average bracket stretcher reads''Str. Dragomanova.sobst.B .. Martyneka''. Street Dragomanova - is in Lviv.
It seems to be this Martynek what is collector [may have on the forum who is from Lviv anyone familiar with this name]. So, the two inscriptions - one written by hand, it follows that the upper inscription is not the author's and Pan Martyneka from Lviv. [But once wrote -- means that you know, I feel alone] Well, really really want to know who are still depicted in the portrait, any, even the not much information could be at least what it zatsepkoy.Ne think that I'm lazy to dig into the internet, I'm just not something I can not find I think there needs some books which I net.Vsem spasibo.S.uv.Yakov.

Tell Wladzislaw and you met with any such replacement "background" to "out", or is it just an assumption erupted over the fact that Memel - it mestnost.Spasibo!.

In general, the actual "background" is a direct translation of "from". All of the old nobility "von" and means the place /possession. We nobilitirovannyh - this is courtesy.

In his explanation, I proceeded from the fact that he had never heard of such a noble way, in any case in Imperial Russia.

I looked "Prussian" (1837) and "German" (1868) noble lexicons and "handbook of the Prussian nobility" (1892), the names of C. f.. M. No, and in Prussia did not mention the nobles Stein.

Thank you very much! Your information, at least, cuts off a branch of the search.

The work itself is very high quality, artist - Academician I.A.H. be seen that relates to work carefully, for this hardly someone or joking inscriptions on podramnike.Tem more than that, in fact, not who did not need to''strengthen ' 'now or what extravagant nadpisyami.Mozhno general, in principle, to miss this inscription, but from what then push off, not even imagine.

Many noble families are tied to the owner thereof of his possessions. In the German lands is the background, the French - de. The same thing - of.
Many Russian noble families have the same origin - Trubetskois, Rzhevski, Mechsherskie. After the accession of Ukraine to Russia local Ukrainian gentry, following the example reigning Russian names, too, formed their names from the area where lived.
