Museum of New Western Art in Moscow emerged as a result of combining the first and second of the new Museum of Western painting.
1st of the new Museum of Western painting was created through a collection of Sergei Shchukin and was opened in 1918 in the former home Shchukin (Big Znamenskii Lane, № 8), and was a collection of Western European (mainly French), painting and sculpture from 60 's. XIX century. (Manet, Renoir, Degas, Monet, V. van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, C. Pizarro, A. de Toulouse-Lautrec, P. Cezanne, Matisse, Picasso, O. Roden et al.)
2nd of the new Museum of Western painting is based on the collection of Ivan Morozov and was opened in 1919 in the building of the city estate Morozova (street Prechistenka, 21).
In 1923, both museums have been combined to give the common name of the new Museum of Western Art, which in 1925 became into a branch of the Museum of Fine Arts. In 1928 the museum was all concentrated in one building at street Prechistenka, 21. Since then, for 20 years the museum has been the undisputed leader of BN Ternovets. In 1948, the State Museum of New Western Art was eliminated as « hotbed of kowtowing to the decadent bourgeois culture », and its exhibits were divided between the Pushkin Museum and the Hermitage.
