Why the painting by Peter Bruegel" the parable of the blind" called medical Handbook

ABOUT the PICTURE

"the parable of the blind" @ - a painting by the Dutch artist Renaissance artist Pieter Bruegel the Elder, completed in 1568. The artist was born in Brabant (in the village of Brueghel, who gave him the name) between 1525 and 1530. Pieter Bruegel the Elder founded a whole dynasty of artists. Painters were his sons (Pieter Brueghel the Younger and Jan Brueghel the Elder), as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

" the parable of the blind" @ - the scenic epitome of the verse of Christ:" If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit" (Matt. 15:14). Of course, the Renaissance artist created this painting to convey their knowledge of human blindness. In this context, physical blindness is a metaphor for spiritual blindness, or inner blindness to true religion. Blind from the paintings of Bruegel are correlated with the blind in the Bible (Christ saw in the Pharisees" blind leaders of the blind"). From Bruegel in the painting is not guilty, but all are doomed to fall because they have lost the true message of Christ.

In this case, the description of Brueghel"s very literal, as the leader of the procession of six blind, fell in a ditch and seem to drag their mates along. Bruegel visually expresses the words of Christ in this truly tragic way. But there is a glimmer of hope: despite the spiritual blindness of the characters is strong and sturdy Church, representing the faith which gives true vision. The blind were frequent" guests" in the paintings of Bruegel, a subject of particular fascination for him ("Battle of carnival and Lent"," the Preaching of John the Baptist"). And what is important: the artist"s attitude to him sympathetically, never patronizing

the CHARACTERS AND the PLOT

What the viewer sees in the painting? The picture is of the 6 blind men, holding each other by the hand or stick. They all head to the Creek, which has falls first blind. On the other side is visible and the village Church. Four of the six high hero holding the head to better use other senses. The diagonal composition of the picture reinforces the motion of the six figures and adds dynamism. The leader of the group has fallen back into the ditch, and, as they all hold hands and their staffs, the Executive group was dragged into the pit all the slaves in a satellite. Palette, consisting mainly of gray, green, brown, green, dark-красного and black, creates a strong and even somewhat gloomy tone. Palette selection can be explained by two factors.

In-первых, the picture was painted only a year before the artist"s death. Disease mongering and the political situation played a role (the last years of his life passed in an atmosphere of terror spread by the head of the counter-reformation Alba). In-вторых, the very subject of the painting (the hopelessness and spiritual blindness) assumes a somber tone. The plot clearly separated from the landscape: the green plains and clearly Flemish landscape. Face and body blind, or secondary parts, including the Church, are depicted exclusively in detail (it is in the spirit Pitera Brueghel, each of which is a thorough detailed composition).

ACCURATE MEDICAL DIAGNOSIS BRUEGEL

as a result of studies it turned out that the picture hides a startling secret. It turns out that Pieter Bruegel the Elder was not only a master painter." The parable of the blind" is an accurate clinical picture of the types of blindness.

So, one of people in the cornea was found the thorn in the form of white spot - a symptom of the fact that the modern physician would call leucomas.

Other the blind man stared at the sky: he suffers from atrophy of the eyeballs - another of the currently known causes of blindness.

Diagnosis third character - enucleation orbit: perhaps his eye was injured during a fight.

another character removed eyes together with the eyelids.

Fifth character has blindness without light perception, or photophobia (increased painful sensitivity to light; photophobia).

Sixth character has pemphigus, or bullous pemphigoid.

In the early paintings of the era blind usually depicted with his eyes closed. Here, Bruegel gives each man a different ocular disease, shown with medical realism. It is this precision and allowed the experts to identify their diagnoses. Such attention to physical manifestations of the disease their heroes @ - the is no exception in the works of Bruegel. In many works the audience can see the lame, the maimed people, depicted with such astonishing precision that any doctor will be able to diagnose the situation of the picture.

This work by Bruegel is widely regarded as a masterpiece for its meticulous attention to detail and the deliberate diagonal composition which emphasizes the confusion of the characters and the loss of balance of the blind. In a series of many critics argued that the characters in the paintings of Bruegel is not only blind, but mute. How else can you explain the fact that they are unable to warn each other about the upcoming fall? Mesopotamia procession of six figures reaches its climax in the fragile emotions and the expression of the second hero, the one whose face is turned to the viewer.

Similar works: Domenico fetti.

What explains such knowledge in medicine, the artist of the XVI century? The story goes about the bright progress in medicine of the XVI century. But the clinical blindness in Bruegel is not correlated with age, because while blindness has been rather little studied. It is usually attributed to the action of the pernicious vapours rising from the stomach and affecting the vision center. Where Bruegel was able to collect medical data and so accurately depict eye diseases, remain unknown. However, this does not detract from the value of paintings, but on the contrary stirs up even more interest in the art of Pieter Bruegel.

To the end of his short life, Bruegel began to make great efforts for exploring the idea of the falling figure. These studies culminated in the painting" the parable of the blind", in which the unity of form, composition, content and expression makes it a significant contribution to European painting. This is one of the greatest Renaissance paintings in her masterful manifestation of the new Testament Prov
