The rapid string passages, the loud shouts and sonorous brass, the rumble of cymbals escalate the excitement, we can imagine suddenly emerging conflicts of the characters on the streets of Verona.
And here through this raging torrent breaks through a delightful love theme, in the first soft hosting English horn and viola section. Tchaikovsky does not allow the listener to fully enjoy this sound, leaving a feeling of hidden danger and so as to imply that love never find true happiness. Now we hear the agitated theme, filled with aching sorrow, and then it grows into an inspired, blissful and full of love, beautiful melody, taken up by the whole orchestra. Again the theme for the interruption, disturbing noises, powerful crescendo reaches its climax, and then it all goes silent. Suddenly out of the silence, you can hear the timpani blows like the heavy tread of the funeral step. Now the theme of love is sharp and distorted. When it fades, we hear the chorale from the introduction of the Overture, it would seem that it"s all over. But the sound of the orchestra grows, a gentle light melody in the strings and the Overture is crowned with a powerful, jubilant chords like claiming undying love of two characters...
