Painter Vasily Vereshchagin

Outstanding artist , famous for depicting military battles, Vasily Vereshchagin was born October 14, 1842 in the family landed in Cherepovets. At the age of eight he entered the Underage Cadet Corps, ending that, in 1853 transferred to St. Petersburg Sea Cadet Corps. At this time, and begins his fascination with drawing. In 1858, the young Vereshchagin started taking lessons at the School of Drawing Society for the Encouragement of Arts. Teachers say his undoubted talent for painting. The young man was very fond of art and drawing in 1860, after successfully completed test, decides to break with the military a career and enter the Academy of Fine Arts against the will of his father, who as a punishment depriving his son of support. A number of works he combines a series: the painting "The fortress wall. Let the will" (1871) severely and firmly expect a fight Russian soldiers. From 1887 to 1901 Vereshchagin devoted work on the paintings that display military events of 1812. In his more than twenty paintings, the artist shows patriotism and heroism of the Russian people against foreign invaders. The final stage of this series is the painting "Night Bivouac of the great army", showing an ignominious end to Napoleon's army.
Patriotic spirit, the depth of the images, the brightness of picture compositions made a worthy contribution to the collection of Russian historical painting of the XIX century.
The artist continues to travel. In the late 80's early 90's, he was twice in America, 1901-1902 in the Philippines and Cuba, and in 1903 - Japan. After that, he wrote a series of paintings inspired by his national colors of Japan.
When Vereshchagin finds the news of the Russian-Japanese war, he leaves all his unfinished paintings and immediately sent to the front, participating in battles, for what would later describe them in his paintings. It is for his paintings of the war, he always tried to preach the message of peace.
