CLASSICAL REALISM
Frost
Ivan Avgustovich Welz was born in the village of Sofino in Samara province in the family of the Austrian merchant. In 1889 he accepted Russian citizenship. In 1885 he entered the St. Petersburg Academy of arts where he studied in the Studio of landscape painting in M. Klodt. In those days it was the most famous and prestigious art school, where studied many famous painters, including Shishkin, Vasnetsov, Kuindzhi and other talented artists.
In the years of training Weltz became the first known independent works, for which he was awarded several gold and silver medals. In 1891 I. A. Weltz successfully graduated from the Academy of arts in the rank of class artist I degree and received the right to travel abroad to Italy, Germany and France to improve his skills as it was accepted in the Academy and should be strictly complied with in relation to talented graduates.
In 1894 he returned to St. Petersburg for two years after his return continued to receive a pension from the Academy.
Ivan Avgustovich vel"ts regularly exhibited his paintings at exhibitions of the Moscow society of lovers of the arts and St-Петербургского (then Petrograd) society of artists. In his work he skillfully used the findings and methods of the Wanderers, combining elements of realism with the academic principles of painting, and thereby opened new facets of his talent.
