PRICE PROVOCATION
(Art and time)
Read in the "Diary" sad brief note posted M. Gelman that it is not going to leave Russia , citing the fact that he , at his age, " need the adrenaline in the blood ." Hoping to learn more, click through to get on the original "Echo of Moscow ", where I find the same tiny text. I rarely read the comments , but then I could not resist . They were very, very much, but their main intonation !
It was a roar , mat, curse , anti-Semitic , anti- Caucasian , anti liberal intellectuals and anti shouts and threats.
Some would say that it is marginal , embittered people , and they can not be taken into account .
But it's people! They should not be despised .
You have to try at least to understand them.
And now , let's go back to the 20 -odd years ago.
1991 . Moscow . Central House of Artists ( CHA) .
I , Minsk , for 50 -year-old artist , with success, hosting the first solo exhibition in Moscow . (It is covered in "Komsomolskaya Pravda ", " Moscow news ", " chimes ", " companion" , and in Tallinn "Gallery ." In the third week , the exhibition an almost hour queue ) .
In parallel , in one of the halls of the CHA passes ( perhaps the first ) exhibition organized by 30 -year-old Marat A. Gelman .
I remember one of the names ( Kulik ) characterizing the specificity of the exhibition.
It was a time of "perestroika" , to this here, nor mine, nor exhibition M. Gelman, would not conceive . Note that we are complete opposites stylistically . Maybe tell the difference generations. I was interested in the inner world and its relation to "eternity" to " absolute ," the problem of the "whole ." Conversely , the artists in his circle were from the external , formal , momentary . Characterized their "freedom " and " looseness " , a tendency to outrageous . Desire for sensationalism at any cost , reaching to cynicism and " actuality ." Marat Aleksandrovich , by this time , was the first private gallery , located in a side street Moscow . Most likely, he does not remember , but I paid him a visit . I found him at tea , talking with a few of their artists . Seeing my booklet , and he politely replied , quite reasonably , that it was " not his profile ."
His rational and pragmatic and intelligent view is not so combined with provocative and outrageous actions, associated with his name. There is not a bad idea to bring the text ads on the front door ( bring about ) : "Gentlemen , anti-Semites ! Please do not worry , pogrom transferred to another place, in connection with the relocation of the gallery . "
But it was the time of "perestroika" , decayed rapidly befell the "communist " society , with all its hypocrisy and injustice. In the eyes of a new born , unfamiliar world . And the activity M.Guelman and his gallery organically fit into this massive process . From a rational , pragmatic point of view , to get an immediate return , immediate success , it was the right decision .
But rationality and pragmatism are not the same atmosphere in which works of art are born .
Here it should be noted that the 20 th century , rebelled against the culture and art of the 19th century , abandoned feeling, which is the basis of art. Refused skill and mastery ( art ) necessary for it ( feeling) transmission. Nevertheless , passion and feeling were needed for this failure . Replacing feelings thought refusal to painting, replacing it with " square ", " readymade ", " conceptual" , too , at first , require explosion of feelings .
But , ultimately , deprived of art , feelings , empathy and humanity, we find ourselves in a space uninhabitable .
And if the first artist - intellectual, severing all ties with society, in exaltation declared himself "king" who stands above all and arrogant " despises the crowd ," that then came sobering . Can not all be "kings " , the king - one society and one and represents a single organism. And if someone is bad, it is bad throughout the body.
Everyone , like every organ in the body , whatever is needed , performs its function .
Here the concept of the "struggle" is inappropriate. Imagine that the liver is struggling with the kidneys, or they , together, struggling with heart or brain !
Recall how in the USSR was first sent and then destroyed in the concentration camps and the intelligentsia . When Russia will recover , and recover from any shock ?
And the destruction of the Jews by the Nazis ? How many talented people have died ! Austria alone has lost an entire mathematical Viennese School . But this irreparable loss not only for the Germans and Austrians , but also for all mankind.
Now , humanity is beginning to realize that the same applies to the states. The recent crisis has shown that there is no independent states. All closely related to each other . It is very suitable saying: " do not dig a hole neighbor , because he can get into it ." The policy of " divide and rule" could not stand the test of time . Divided and destabilized neighbor is in turn a threat to others. Recall train revolutionaries sent to Russia for its expansion ! The consequences were unforeseen and catastrophic not only for Germany itself , but also for the whole world .
But history has no subjunctive mood . Were the reasons that happened what happened . The 20th century ended. Priorities are changing dramatically . Comes to understand that negativity does not work anymore . Fanaticism and intransigence of the warring camps should remain in the past century. None of us need a new civil war . Do not need it ( in the light of new historical experience ) and our neighbors .
Who can oppose the economically prosperous state and equitable as possible about its internals ? Peacefully oriented and included in the world community ?
You say , " but this is ideal ."
Is it possible without a goal and ideal to do anything worthwhile ?
And if someone with money pits and provokes us against each other , let them think about the price you have to pay , if not him , then his children.
