When in May 1959 at the National American exhibition at Sokolniki in Moscow I saw a modern painting (D. Pollock, Rothko M., A. Albright, A. Calder, A. Hills, have Kooning, I. Tangi), I did not take it nature and did not think that in the future it will be my main occupation in life. In early 1972, I accidentally wandered into the studio of Vladimir Ovchinnikov (in a makeshift lane in Leningrad), where informal informally exhibited artists. Later, fate brought me to the artist Alexander Leonov. I was often zahazhivat to him to see the paintings and talk over a beer for the Arts.
Remarkable 1974 - "Bulldozer" and "Ismail" exhibition in Moscow and "Gazovskaya" exhibition in Leningrad. I was fortunate to visit the exhibition in the woods "Izmailovo", after which the house collector Andrey Rusanov (long clearing in Moscow), I met with the artists Vladimir Nemukhin, Oscar Rabin, Dmitry Plavinsky, Leo Krapivnitskaya, Anatoly Zverev.
Communication with Leonov has prompted me to make a couple of dozen pencil drawings, which in December 1975, I brought to the court vystavkoma who prepared the exhibit in g /k "Nevsky". Exhibition in the Andrew Aref'eva, Igor Ivanov, Yuri Zharkikh, Oleg Ovchinnikov, gave the "good." It is "good" for me was the beginning of a creative life. Specially for the exhibition I made three films - "The Ring", "Train" and "LandshafUchastie in the exhibition, which was held as a holiday, inspired me to create new works. I remember that the images of the picture is in my mind as phantoms, had only to invest them in the flesh. So there was about a dozen paintings that were a revelation to me.
In February 1976, Ovchinnikov invited me and Yuri Lukshin to Exhibit at the apartment L. Kuznetsova in Moscow. There I met an artist whose work makes me a keen interest - Edward Steinberg and Ilya Kabakov.
After two successful past exhibitions ("Gazovskoy" and "Neva"), the Leningrad government decided to end the "experiment" and declared that due to the lack of free exhibition space shows there will be no more. Then the artists turned to the Department of Culture for permission to hold the exhibition at the walls of the fortress. There was no answer. Morning, May 30, 1976 Putilin, Lenovo, and I went to the paintings went to the place of the proposed exhibition. But instead of the exhibition, we got to the police station, where there was a "conversation" with the Department of Culture and the "art critics." Is not it a great place for such a conversation! But the result was quite positive - art exhibitions have been resolved.
In December 1976, d /to them. Ordzhonikidze (Leningrad) the first post-war non-figurative exhibition of Leningrad artists. But me in the exhibition was attended by Vasiliev, Yuri Dushlenko, I. Zakharov Ross, Evgeny Mikhnov-Votenko, A. Putilin.
In May 1978, Department of Culture has provided me the opportunity to hold a solo exhibition. In the d /to them. Krupskaya (Leningrad), I put the 32 paintings and 16 graphic works.
