Colin Adams is said to be best known for his guide to Wales for mountain walkers.
Mr Adams's friend and publisher Myrddin ap Dafydd said: 'It is a terrible shock - he was a very pleasant man who loved the countryside.
'He was remarkably fit for a man of his age - he still regularly climbed some of the most difficult mountains in Wales.
'He had recently climbed many of them again so he could update the book for our latest edition.'
Friends said Mr Adams had become fascinated with Russia and had visited Moscow five times in the past four years.
A friend in Moscow - named as Marianna P - said: 'I met him several years ago at a cafi in the All Russia Exhibition Center.
He did not smoke and didn't abuse alcohol - sometimes in the evening he liked to sit in a bar and drink a beer.'
