For many undoubtedly will be the discovery of the fact that many famous authors, who achieved recognition in Europe and the United States, whose work can decorate any museum in the world, in fact, are our countrymen. Abroad, at the same time for many is the discovery that their "hometown heroes" are Jews, besides people from Russia: Chagall, Zadkine, Lipchitz, Delaunay - the color of the Parisian school. Not to mention Soutine, who most dramatically affected and Willem de Kunninga, and Pollock. On the impact on the consciousness of society, art is much more effective government or public organizations, because art is directly appealing to the senses, to what makes us human. That is why I find art a powerful tool for building a tolerant society.
- You have from the outset was clearly articulated the idea of a collection?
- Not really. I wanted it to be something to do with Russia, something "very Russian". However, this is sure to be something "very Jewish", again for obvious reasons. I need something extraordinary. In addition, because the concept of "wealthy" conditionally - I had a bracket. Imagine that I would formulate a problem like this: gather the best impressionist of all time - the collection would have ended on the second or third job. Or even the best abstract of America - the resources would be exhausted by the fifth work. And I decided that "the most Russian, most Jewish and most outstanding" - is the one sport where I could just be a champion in my resources. I just became easier to breathe. I felt the need to "draw Periodic Table", that is, write a list of artists, after explaining to myself that they must not only be outstanding, and the contributing fundamental contribution to the development of art, because it formally on the basis of suitable order of 200-250 artists. As a result, 33 were chosen hero, as in Pushkin. They were pioneers, from which something has begun - as the Russian avant-garde began with Serov, which gives no rest to Petya Avenue. And so each of them: a Rothko abstraction, Lipschitz with cubism in sculpture ... Most of these artists are not known in Russia and the West are known not as a Russian. It's like people anywhere, some ghosts, who came from nowhere and nobody knows how to hit. But in fact, in Jewish tradition there is an explanation of this word. And Pharaoh called Joseph "a young Ivrii" which means "man who came from nowhere and passed by." This word is the prototype of the word "Jew". It turns out that the collection - is a portrait of the diaspora.
- It turns out that all the artists whose paintings were included in the collection MAGMA, immigrants?
- Yes, all of them were immigrants (some more experience, some less). And many of them, such as Chagall, were immigrants are multiple: from Russia went to Paris, then came back, went to America, then to Israel, etc. The collection corresponds to the spirit and lifestyle. The success of these artists, who compete with local artists belonging to the titular nationalities, became for me the best example of tolerance. For example, the Paris School - the phenomenon of the early XX century until 1930 - it is conventionally called Paris: there are representatives of Latin America (Diego Rivera), Japanese (Leonard Fujita), of course, Russian - almost 80%and so on . And all these artists opened thanks to the spirit of free creativity and competition, which prevailed in Paris. Due to "Paris" school of Paris was the world capital of art, these artists have become its heroes. And it further, finding her wings, they flew to America, returned to Russia, but has recognized geniuses. And I think that in this sense, the collection has enormous educational value, and it has overstepped the scope of private collectors. Therefore, together with the Ministry of culture we registered the Museum of Avant-Garde (MAGMA).
- What, in your opinion, tolerance?
- Tolerance is one of the most complex sciences known to mankind. It is a tolerant environment is the very soil which contributes to the fundamental development of art, and vice versa. Tell the story. I knew that Chaim Soutine died in 1943 in Paris, and I decided that I should find his grave. I read on the Internet that he is buried in Montparnasse cemetery. So I go to the sign, as if playing "hot - cold". Like hot, but I can not find the grave. And then I realized that the grave is only the date and the cross. Dates converge, but the cross-then what has to Chaim Soutine, who was known to be a Jewish artist? I realized the important thing: this is another proof of the fundamental idea of tolerance. It is clear that his non-Jewish comrades were buried. Chaim Soutine died of a seizure ulcers, no hospital would not take it - was in 1943. It is known that the grave of his speech addressed to the piercing Picasso, who highly appreciated it. This question is are enclosed with the fact that Modigliani told his friends, when he went out of life. He said: "You do not have to worry, because my friend is far above me in talent - is Chaim Soutine. And it sounded Picasso with the opposite sign: "We left, no one compared to the retired." So, these people even after death to defend his friend from the future of mockery. They wrote only the date and put only the cross. Interestingly, immediately emerged as a dialogue of civilizations saves from the incorrect expression of some people against others.
Or another example. Several years ago the catalog-reason sculptor Ossip Zadkine. It is not very widely known in Russia but in France he is a hero. When Jacques Chirac was mayor of Paris, that he made, perhaps, as much of his sculptures, as Luzhkov - works Tsereteli. So, this directory Chirac's preface begins: "The outstanding French sculptor Ossip Zadkine was born in Smolensk." And, let's say, we ask the Governor of the Smolensk region, whether he knows Zadkine? Is there a museum in Smolensk Ossip Zadkine? I would really like to be. To the governor, so that there is a governor, the president was proud that we have such a distinguished compatriot.
- You are not going to change the formula for the collection?
- The original formula of "very Russian, very Jewish and outstanding works. We did have one of the world's finest collections of Chaim Soutine - all of his outstanding works are with us. We have absolutely the best work Tischler, Sonia Delaunay and Joseph Zadkine, Lipschitz, the outstanding work of Chagall. To date, there are small gaps in the "Periodic Table", which we were 10 years ago. Formally, all filled, but some cells, I would still be replaced on the best work - there are 2.3 cell, where I dramatically improved the quality. But now I'm wondering about the expansion of the collection of formulas, that move at least from the Russian Jewish artists of the European Jewish artists of the XX century. It will be a logical and clear to the continuation of the concept. You can then move to America. But still we remain in the so-called Euro-Atlantic civilization.
- But still these artists in some way be linked with Russia?
- Not necessarily. Although I have a suspicion that in general everything connected with Russia. Russia was an empire. Poland, Finland were part of the Russia Empire. If you take the Jewish population of Western Europe and America, very small part of the roots will not be out of Russia Empire. So the collection will be a direct continuation of the designated concept.
When the formula is clear, we can only observe the principles. Very important was the principle of the genius of each artifact that was given is not easy. We are not trying to buy a large sample of each artist, we wanted to buy at least one of his masterpiece. To the collection was received by the different taste eye, it should consist of outstanding artifacts. And here is very important principle of continuity of the chain. Because the collection, which is inconsistency in quality, produces disharmonious impression, but it is very harmful. The man who comes to the museum or inspect carefully selected collection of must see that each artifact - this is another point of view, the general attitude and not just an accident. For these accounts carefully monitored, which requires great effort and strain.
- What, for example, efforts?
- Nobody wants to, even under difficult physical circumstances, to part with their works of art. I am referring to the heirs of the artist. This is a very strong bond, much stronger than might appear at first glance. The fact that these people grow up with work, live with them as family members. And every purchase - this is a serious psychological study, which may last for years. In particular, the work of Chagall's "Vision. Self-portrait with the Muse "gets seven years - seven years of continuous communication with the owner. And, unfortunately, only his death led to what we were able to buy it. And this man, and not daring to sell the painting, bequeathed it to his heirs, and sell only Kantor, and even identified some of the parameters of the transaction. I was shocked how much it was an honest and decent man.
- But you can, if necessary, to leave this job?
- Well, of course, one can not exclude themselves, but for me extremely painful parting with any picture. In the collection there are works that were acquired outside the theme. And once I decided to his friend one of these paintings give - even that was painful. So let them do it after me. I and the museum will work as possible in one direction - toward the gathering.
- How do you understand what the job and no other must buy for my collection?
- In my field of vision gets a work that interests me is shocking, I feel that to live without him I can not. I have my own criteria, this is an outstanding work or not. If I look at it a few seconds, and then for days I remember what is written there, then it's just a brilliant job. And on the formal genius of the common look, turn your back and that there is not quite remember.
What I do to get used to the image and avoid the risk to less than rely on intuition? I take a picture of the work and the buttons around the house are located. In the bathroom I look at her when shave, opposite his bed in the living room at the piano at podstavochku for feet - I have it everywhere. And I decide for themselves the question: I can not live without her or not. If I clearly understand that to live without it I can not, it is already beginning to think about technology acquisition.
- How do you combine business and collectibles?
- In our life, politics, economics, art - all the continuous space. This is what I call the harmonization of life. I live in a continuous space for themselves, which occurs at the same time spending money and earning. I feel the brunt of several destinations, which I gladly bear. The main thing is my destiny - is to be the father of their children, a good father. I am the father of many children by today's standards - I have three of them. The second most important - my family is in the broad sense, I care about her. And then - my Jewish family, for which I also replied. And it is almost 3 million people who live in Europe. I am responsible for a sufficiently large socially-oriented business, which actively'm over 15 years. And I no one step in my business, ought to be ashamed.
- You often had to buy work at highly inflated price?
- My mom says so: you can not buy what you want, not overpaying.
