X-ray helped scientists find the original paintings by Van Dyck

Scientists were able to identify which of the two paintings "Saint Jerome and the Angel", written in the Antwerp studio of Anthony Van Dyck between 1618 and 1621 years, is the original, which - with a copy of it. About it writes The Art Newspaper.
One of the images of Saint Jerome with the angel is in the National Museum of Sweden, the second - on long-term storage in the Rotterdam Museum Boymans - van Beuningen. Cloth from Stockholm was in a meeting of the royal family from 1746 or 1747, when it was commissioned by King Adolf Fredrik. Netherlands Van Dyke, in turn, has long been in private collections and has remained virtually unknown until 1972. Accordingly, the debate about which of the two "Jerome" was written earlier, lasted almost 40 years.

In February 2009, both paintings were first "brought together" in Stockholm, in order that they can be compared with each other directly. After that experts from both museums have taken samples of paint, and had X-rays and infrared thermography canvases. Picture from Rotterdam was in better condition; in Stockholm during the previous restorations were damaged face of the characters and the folds of garments Jerome.

However, the picture from the Netherlands were found details of which were present initially, but then painted by the artist (so-called pentimento). Thus, it became clear that the first coat of Hieronymus reached to the ground, and could see only a foot hermit. In addition, Van Dyke and changed the image of an angel. These considerations, coupled with a freer brushstrokes allowed to take a picture of the Boijmans - van Beuningen original.

Nevertheless, it remains unclear what was the contribution of Van Dyck in a copy of the Stockholm museum - whether the artist took part in its creation or the whole picture painted of his students, taking an early "Jerome" for example.
