Question Rembrandt. Why encroach on his paintings?

What do you think, why Rembrandt's Night Watch "and" Danae suffered from vandalism? "Night Watch", even twice.

I do not know how this is true or not.
Rumor tells that "Dana" from the Hermitage long disappeared and been replaced copy. To say and doused with acid to make it easier to keep track alternates.

Danae came to the Hermitage at a time when museums grow through the generosity of kings. In 1772 it was bought by Catherine II of Baron Crozat collection in France and more than two hundred years been one of the major masterpieces of the Hermitage collection ... Saturday morning July 15, 1985 in the exhibit hall in Rembrandt's painting unknown man doused with sulfuric acid from the liter cans and twice stabbed him with a knife. It was found that the offender - a citizen of Lithuania - Mentally ill, and, judging from the direction of strokes, in his madness was a well-known system. ... "Seeing her for the first time in the process of restoration, I could not hold back her tears, - admits the Hermitage director Mikhail Piotrovsky. - Largely because it was another "Danae. Oldest restorer Hermitage Alexei Bryantsev and still believes the only correct version of the conservation of failed product masterpiece. This means: fix now in a position at the time of the accident, make a strong and stable, not touching, and brushes - to keep locked up in vaults accessible only to researchers and the public to provide a copy, complete with reconstruction. "Suggest me a very high head and paint to recreate Rembrandt, flatly refused to be. And with my comrades, fulfilled conservation, I have no differences ", - explains Bryantsev. Comrades, conservation is not limited, but more on that later.

Briantsev was among the first employees, who appeared in the museum at the weekend - on call, an hour after the emergency. Damaged canvas removed from the frame and moved to the laboratory, where, on the recommendation of Leningrad's leading chemists, washed in an upright position. By evening the reaction stopped, the acid was neutralized. On the other hand, remembers a veteran, reacted actively to the party organs. Employees of the Regional Committee and City Committee, who came to the Hermitage directly with cottages, in denim suits and their wives, repeating the mantra: "Comrades, everything should be fine. Comrades, we need to remove all traces and unnoticed. In the future, this principle of informing the public has to realize after the Chernobyl accident ...

Alas, less diversion in the Hermitage was absolutely impossible: acid burnt in the famous picture of deep furrows. And let it be, for computer data, there is still about 70 percent of author's letters, comfort the weak - mostly background and details. Overvalued part - a female figure - took over the main outburst of aggression. Plus knife wounds to his stomach and thigh. Fortunate that raspolosovat Dana, the maniac did not work: breaking through the body, a knife stuck in the crosspiece stretcher ...

In "posthumous" Preservation of the remains was considered another option: to reconstruct a picture of Rembrandt possible believable and beautiful. Proposals of this kind arise as an alternative to "death seriously," they can hear from the classroom restorers. In a recent video link Louvre - Hermitage, on the "Danae", the French colleagues cited the example of the second life of frescoes by Piero della Francesca, paintings by Andrea del Sarto. Often in this case, a monument created a work of art itself as it may disappear.

Either way, win-win options for the Hermitage was not. Each promised the inevitable losses, and no illusions return the picture pristine appearance. As in the military field surgery, they talked about the choice for health reasons. And the choice was made, or rather, dictated by the conservative traditions and norms of the Hermitage restorative ethics. He was to gather - to try to assemble - pieces by Rembrandt in a single image and to maintain the impression that it generates. Above this puzzle trinity restorers higher qualification - Yevgeny Gerasimov, Alexander Rahman, Gennadiy Shirokov - along with providing scientific and methodological part Tatiana Alioshina and pored the past 12 years.

Reason to believe it had not hopeless. Acid, now disfigured and, above all, the figure given at different depths: up to a picture, to podmalevka to the second layer, they were scattered plots of original painting, something which is not touched - to something and had to consolidate. By the end of 1985 conservation work completed: to strengthen the paint layer and the ground restored varnish, summed up the new lining canvas.

The next two, if not more, years struggled with drips that have arisen during the fateful day of June 15. Then mixed with acid and water particles of paint running down from the top, dark part of the fabric, Danae clung to the body, penetrated into the pores, becoming rough spongy growths on his living tissue. Restorers dreamed of by removing them with a scalpel, open areas of the intact letter. But in vain, they permeated too deeply, mixing with a layer of copyright - do not shoot the same prior to its complete loss.

However, for Gerasimov and Co. is an argument in favor of the correctness of the chosen path. Bring (not them - to someone else) to do the reconstruction of the picture, would have toned these reliefs, hiding the original pieces by Rembrandt. They decided to save some sinters: damaged, but the original painting. I refused to sent the American restorer pasta for guidance gloss: the uneven terrain - this is the touch of fate, it is something important from the biography of the picture, the sign of the conjugate with it a legend. Hardly anyone would dream of reconstructing the Parthenon, or to attach the hands of Venus de Milo. There can be just a joke: there is nothing that is decorated with a woman, as a rich biography. Speaking seriously, the restorers were able to prove: crippled woman is beautiful, until it was painted by the creator.

But for this they had to, as the crisis in medicine possible, weigh in the balance of compromise: that give salvation, than to yield to any one segment did not lose the presence of Rembrandt. Perhaps, when he returned the integrity of scattered islands and points, somewhere lost vibrance of colors, light and shadow disappear. But given the Master saved the form, colors, proportions. Characteristic of them approach the subject with drapery harboring feet Danae. It is literally washed away hellish mixture. Restorers advised her to reconstruct - what could be simpler? or you are not artists? They considered Board absurd: no one except the Rembrandt may not finish the lost tissue. Of course, over the years thoroughly explored every inch of the picture. Work could with eyes closed, but the art involved in the restoration only in daylight - fully armed view. In an era of political upheaval for them all but forgotten, no one would drive, did not require a gift to the next congress, red date calendar. On the other hand, that is 12 years compared to eternity? But if not insensitive to the apex of the triangle intuition, whether the painting itself is suggested to them: it's time to finish. Seems Gerasimov spoke: "Two or three points more can be touched, but then have to touch the neighbor. The more touch, the less original painting. State Commission, authoritative art historians and restorers from other museums in the world have confirmed: the time has come.

The exhibition, which returned close to Dana will documents, watercolors, photography, reflecting its Hermitage planidu, the canvases of Titian and Blanchard on the story of the daughter of the king argosskogo, multimedia, allowing the viewer "under a magnifying glass" to make out fragments of pictures, - is designed to year and four days. Hermitage submit to a court professionals and the public "kitchen" that is not accepted in all major museums. "Conservatism, we have combined with the openness" - grins Piotrowski. Gerasimov configured indifferently: "Some will criticize others - praise, others shrug their shoulders." But some experts have already expressed: "Danae" remains in the top ten masterpieces of the Hermitage.

A year later, it becomes clear whether the painting will return to the studio or at their original place in the Hall of Rembrandt. One is certain: from now on this magnificent woman will be guarded as never before. Defiled her rapist, they say, has died - she, thank God, survived. But the persistence of beauty - a myth. At the extreme extent of the mad-century manuscript burn, set fire to herself as an actress, beauty for all to see treat monsters.
