Now about the exhibition. Half of the works - with a 60-year on 77 th, when I emigrated. These works from Moscow private collections. The other half - that is written in the 90's and kept by me, or was bought by the founder of the New York Russian World Gallery Felix Komarov. In "retrospect", as you see a tremendous gaping hole. The best of the paintings sold in the West have changed over the years by several owners, and I can tell you to call only the first buyer, and where the picture now - I have no idea.
- But can you say when and under what circumstances to understand that for you the main thing - to paint?
- This thought came to me in strange circumstances in 15 years. I was in camp, and I was there somehow was not very comfortable. Instead of communicating with the other children sat and sketched. And suddenly clearly understand why I feel so lonely. Because I'm an artist. And artists - other people. As we say that there is life in the world and life in the monastery. Back in Moscow, I told the parents about their desire to "leave the world" - to go to art school. I told her about a man named Teddy Arkhipov. I did in art school without any preparation. Not in a circle until it did not go, nor in the House of Pioneers. He came home at lunchtime, he sees - I was crying. "What's the matter?" I say: "begins the exam, and I'm sitting at home." His father, a wonderful man, said: "Lord, Come take my work and went to school. I'll call the factory, saying that ill." During the 15 minutes before the first exam, we rushed up to his father in Lavroushinsky lane, he found the director, went with him into his office and told me that himself in his childhood dream of being an artist, that he did not have to be an artist, but he wants his son to become. .. - Courage helped?
- By some intuition, all done. By the principle of "hay-straw". They put a shadow pencil, eraser to erase here. The commission must have decided: come nugget. I accepted. - I have received for all merit. I was always violate public order. After the first course of the Minsk Institute, where I did, graduated with honors from the school, we were taken to the sketches. In the village Kissels. An old folk artist BSSR taught us to "realistically transmit natural environment." I chose a place, put the easel and began to sketch the cabin, a mill, willows. I took it and threw a pebble in the stream. - How do you come to fame? It's clear that not just "suddenly", as you did in art school and have been excluded from the institute in Minsk.
- All "suddenly" in my life been preparing for years. First of Fame, which caused my departure from the country, came to fashion. It played a great role Yevtushenko, who helped me a lot since the beginning of our acquaintance in the mid-50's. He helped me, in particular, material for which I otdarival his paintings. Eugene led to my customers, they brought in Tushino, where I lived, my friends. My first exhibition was held at the Kurchatov Institute. Me with someone's filing came young physicists, and they, in virtue of the fact that they are, quite simply, forged nuclear shield powers, gave great relief. They could not speak in the sense that you can read Tolstoy, and, say, Platonov prohibited. And these guys told me: "We will show your paintings in his institute." The exhibition was opened, and two days later closed. The funny thing is that covered her long-time friend of my parents, who represented the Kurchatov Institute of the KGB. But set it up as if closed my exhibition themselves perturbed physics.
My second solo exhibition was in five years. Again, the "white bone", the architects, said: "The Director is on vacation, do a show on one day, for his. Before departure, I had little interest in the history of painting, I was only interested in myself. Arrived - and rushed to see museums, exhibitions, books. There were buyers, its audience ...
- Oleg, play in the artist and the audience? That's "Self-Portrait" in 1969, near which we stand - so much has been written about him, and themselves-something that you think of him?
- Here is shown my character, enclosed in a museum frame. It seems to be a portrait, and yet not a portrait. Because the character and a beautiful frame with a dangling before his eyes a string exist separately. That is not mine, but his self-portrait. Do you understand?
