Ilya Bolotovskii born July 1, 1907 in St. Petersburg , in an assimilated Jewish family. His father , a graduate of the Law Faculty of St. Petersburg University ( 1910) Julius Y. Bolotovskii (born Julius J. Bolotovsky, 1885-1957), before 1917, practiced law in Petrograd ; mother , Anastasia Abramovna Shapiro (1879-1972) was a painter and decorator .
After the October Revolution he lived in Baku, where in 1921 through Georgia family fled to Constantinople. Studied at izeuitskoy school in Constantinople , in 1923 came to the United States. He lived in New York, he studied at the National Academy of Design . During this period came to an art group "Ten » (The Ten), which was also attended by young artists such as Louis Shanker , Adolph Gottlieb , Mark Rothko and Joseph Solman . Members of the group opposed the conservatism of the Academy and staged exhibitions of "independent art."
In the 30 years of the twentieth century artist devotes his creative geometric abstractionism . In 1936 he became a founding member of "American abstract artist » (American Abstract Artists), dedicated to the popularization of abstract art and assists artists. In the late 30 's - early 40 -ies I. Bolotovskii neoplastitsizma falls under the influence and work of Piet Mondrian .
In the 60s creates paintings , images which lie in 3 dimensions , usually crossed vertical and (or) diagonal stripes . At the same time, teaches art at the University of Long Island. I. Bolotovskogo paintings refer to the directions Cubism and geometric abstraction .
Ilya Bolotovskii died in 1981. Elderly artist inadvertently stepped into the empty elevator shaft with mechanical doors when the car was on the ground floor .
