Agafonov, Eugene A. (1879 - 1955)

One of the main representatives of the Ukrainian modernist painter, illustrator and stage designer. Born in Kharkov, Ukraine. In 1899, he entered the St. Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied P. Kovalevsky and F. Roubaud. In 1907 received the title of the artist and the gold medal. During the Revolution of 1905 illustrated the Kharkov satirical magazines "Bayonet", "The Sword", "evil spirit", etc. Since 1906 he participated in exhibitions Islands Kharkov artists. Performed the illustrations to Gogol. In 1908 he took an active part in preparing the exhibition "Link", organized in Kiev Burliuk, Alexandra Exter, and M. Larionov. In 1909 he made a ground-breaking exhibition in Kharkov "Blue lily" and founded the experimental theater "Blue Eyes", which is designed for a number of productions, including "The Stranger" by Alexander Blok, later shown in St. Petersburg. In 1911 the union organized avant-garde "Ring", which held three exhibitions with the participation of representatives of the "Knave of Diamonds" (1911, 1912, 1914). In 1913 he participated in exhibitions "Jack of Diamonds group in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Served as an art critic. In the early 1920's he emigrated to the United States. Easel painting, graphic design and advertising. Participated in the exhibition of the island of Independent Artists (1929) and a group exhibition at the gallery French (1931) in New York, held a solo exhibition in New York and in Connecticut. Author portraits, still lifes, genre scenes and decorative panels. Many works that were in Kharkov XM, died during the war, survived only a few drawings and theatrical sketches.
