Artist Sodom aka Giovanni Antonio Bazzi

Sodom (Sodoma) ( 1477 - 1549 )

Italian painter of the Sienese school of painting of the Renaissance .
proper name of Giovanni Antonio Bazzi (Giovanni Antonio Bazzi). Born in Vercelli , near the Savoy . C 1498 consisted in training Leonardo da Vinci in Milan , and in 1501 moved to Siena, where he completed several frescoes and paintings . In 1505 Sodom created a major cycle of frescoes based on the life of St. Benedict for the monastery of Monte Oliveto Maggiore and the " Descent from the Cross " ( now in the Museum of Siena). It is believed that the background in this picture inspired by the works of the Dutch painter Jan van Eyck , though many Italian artists , in particular Leonardo da Vinci, on the backgrounds of his paintings also depicted landscape . In Renaissance paintings, such as this one often performed studio - a group of artists working under the guidance of one master . Master created the overall composition and wrote the key elements of the picture , and his aides - background and secondary figures . Despite this, the whole picture was attributed to the master himself . Born in Lombardy , Sodom worked in Siena and Rome , where he performed a lot of orders .

In 1515 Sodom returned to Siena, where in 1518 he wrote four frescoes of stories for Mary Oratory of San Bernardino . From 1518 to 1525 Sodom apparently was in Upper Italy , where he became acquainted with the work of artists of the Lombard school .

Since 1525 1537 Sodom lived in Siena. In 1525 the artist began work on their major , imbued with depth perception and truthfulness of the product - based on the lives of the frescoes of St. Catherine in the chapel of the Holy Church of San Domenico , and also wrote several portraits of saints and "Resurrection" for Siena Hall .

Sodom led cheerful lifestyle , his eccentric nature would not allow the artist to carefully work on sketches from nature and his paintings .

Giovanni Antonio Bazzi , died on February 15, 1549 in Siena .

Paolo Giovio , amounting in 1523-27 's " The Biography of Raphael , "reports of Sodom , that it has an inherently " absurd and changeable , with print madness thinking. Vasari describes as Giovanni Antonio " madman " and " the beast ." He believed that the artist did not try to communicate with people wise and worthy, but instead "... kept at home all kinds of strange beasts : badgers , squirrels, monkeys , marmosets , dwarf donkeys , horses, Barbary prize trotters , horses with small island Elba , jays , dwarf chickens, Indian turtles and other animals of the same sort ... in all of these beasts was he crows , whom he taught to speak , and often imitated the voice of Giovanni Antonio ... Likewise all the other animals were so tame that constantly walked him around the house , playing the most bizarre games and uttering the wildest sounds, which only happens in the world ... ". In short, Giovanni Antonio loved to communicate with the little animals , it gave him pleasure , and little animals responded to him in return . Partially confirmed by the words of Vasari fresco " The Miracle of the sieve ' in the monastery of Monte Oliveto , which Sodom entered his portrait. At his feet, you can see two hand badgers , and probably the very raven, who spoke in his voice .
